About Season Stats
The Ranked leaderboard is a great place to consistently find the best players and to see how they adapt to the meta. The first Monday of every month, the season ends and a new one begins. While players are competing to reach the top, we are tracking their results and deck choices.
With this blog, we present a summary and a few insights of all the data that we collected during the last days of the season, with a focus on the decks that players used to obtain their final rank.
Stats Format Basics
These stats are based on the decks and card collections of the best players, the ones who finished among the top 1,000 players in Ranked.
Over this blog, we'll look at card stats with tables that use the following format:
- Usage refers to the share of players who used the card in their main deck. This stat is paired with a change %, which is the difference when compared to last season's usage.
- Average Rank is the mean of all the placements from players who used this card. The center point is 500, so if the value is below 500, it means the card is quite good.
- Have It Maxed (HIM) refers to the share of players who have that card at Level 16, which is the ideal level to compete in Ranked.
- Usage/Maxed (U/M) shows the amount of players who use a card from those that have it maxed. Some cards can be harder to unlock and level up, so usage may not be a good indicator if it's being held down by other factors. It's also relevant to know that every season boosts a few cards, which allows players to use them without the need to level them up.
Win Rate VS Rank
Due to the nature of the ladder system, card win rates aren't truly useful to understand the strength of a card. We think a mix of the stats listed above can paint a more accurate picture of the state of each card.
Why does this happen? Ladder systems with score-based matchmaking aim to pair players with others of similar strength. If the amount of battles played is sufficient, the score of the player stabilises, leading to a win rate of ~50%.
Better players stabilise at higher scores than worse players, but in the long term, the winrate becomes similar. This causes this metric to be fairly irrelevant when compared to rank and usage.
Deck Meta
Top 10 Players
These were the main decks used by the Top 10 players of the season.
Best Players by Win Condition
This section is a list with the highest ranked player for each win condition, and all the decks are available below to copy into the game.
Some of the players run decks with dual win conditions, causing them to appear multiple times in the leaderboard.

Supercell Super Creators
Not all content creators compete in the Ranked leaderboard, but those who do have large audiences that follow their gameplay.
Although their decks shouldn't be taken as a representative sample of the meta, their choices still carry an unusual weight that can shape how the community overall perceives the competitive meta.

Note that this list only includes Super Creators, who are in the highest tier of Supercell's creator program. There are many other competitive players who also live stream their gameplay, but they usually have less reach.
Deck Variety
Across the top 1K leaderboard, there are many kinds of players. Some regularly use the same deck, regardless of the meta (one-tricks), others like to create their own for each meta, and others run with the most popular decks of the leaderboard.
This chart compares deck variety with previous seasons. In the first category, you find decks that are unique in the leaderboard.
Moving to the right, each group represents a different threshold of deck popularity. In the last category, you can see the amount of players using decks with more than 20 users.
Usage of the most popular deck in recent seasons:
- Season 83: 33 uses
- Season 84: 29 uses
- Season 85: 37 uses (this season)
- Season 86: 34 uses (this season)
This season, one-off decks became more popular.

This other chart shows a more detailed evolution for each of the deck categories across the last 12 seasons (so 1 year in total). Compared to the previous chart, this one gives a better sense of the total usage share per category.

Card Variety
Before we go into more detailed card stats, this section is meant to give some perspective to our results. Are there any long term trends in how the card meta develops? Does the current season stand out?
This chart groups together cards based on the amount of uses they had during each season. The groups we have chosen are a bit arbitrary, but they make reading this data a bit easier.

Another useful way to look at the meta is by how much usage has changed relative to the previous season, what we call volatility. If volatility is high, that means that card usages have changed a lot, and the meta will likely feel different. This doesn't make it intrinsically better or worse, but it does relate to how fresh or stale the meta feels to players.

Tower Troops
In the Tower Troop category, Princess remains the stable default. Among the alternative options, Dagger Duchess has performed well, but is still a very niche option.
Card Name
---
Evolutions
Cannon and Baby Dragon are tied at the top, with 128 uses each.
Elite Barbarians enter the meta just below that, by 1 use, a very popular release.
Royal Ghost, which used to be the most popular evo, drops 4 points. It remains a Top 10 evolution.
The biggest usage decrease was for Goblin Cage, which falls 6 points; that's about 2/3 less usage, very significant.
Archers had the best average rank, at #347. It's very unusual for cards to get above #400 with decent usage.
Like last season, every evolution was used in at least 1 deck. Hunter was the least popular one, with a single use.
Top 3 evolutions:
- Archers
- Royal Hogs
- Skeletons
Card Name

Champions & Heroes
Champions and Heroes compete to fit in the Hero Slot, and also compete with Evolutions for the Wild Slot.
Since this constraint was implemented, Champions have suffered very low usage. They are generally balanced as normal cards, meaning that they are outclassed by the stronger card forms.
Champions are always an interesting category because they exclude each other in decks. But players don't always have a Champion in their deck, so that's why "No Champion" is listed as well.
Although Heroes have a much higher total usage, the top 2 positions of this category are now occupied by Champions. It's also also worth noting that despite having such high usage, both of these Champions retain very high rank average.
Goblinstein has multiplied in usage, from 3% to 9%; the biggest increase in the category.
Hero Goblins had the biggest drop in the category, from 11% to 3%.
Archer Queen has the best rank in the category, closely followed by Hero Knight.
Hero Knight is another card that also fell a lot in terms of usage, it used to be #1 in this chart. However, the great average rank it still has indicates us that this was likely overdone and will recover usage soon.
The bottom of this chart isn't as positive for Champions as the top. In the 2 last spots we find Monk and Little Prince, with very little usage and bad ranks.

Evos VS Heroes
The Wild Slot provides a great environment to compare Evolutions, Heroes and Champions. Players can use this slot for any of the special forms, so their choice will show us what they prefer.
Double Hero usage increased slightly, but with a bad average rank; it still seems a suboptimal option.
The amount of decks without Heroes increased due to Champions performing well this season.
Like last season, every player used at least 1 Evolution.

Full breakdown of options
This image shows all the available combinations of the current Special Slot system. The numbers in the tittles are abbreviations in which:
- E stands for Evolution
- H stands for Hero
- C stands for Champion
For example, "E2 -H1 - C0" means 2 Evolutions, 1 Hero and 0 Champions.

Special Forms VS Normal Cards
Comparing special forms to their normal cards is a great way to see how relevant each Hero and Evolution ability actually is.
If we also look at the usage of the normal card, we can get a better sense of their place in the meta, helping us answer:
- Is the normal card strong and usable by itself?
- Is the Evolution / Hero necessary and what makes it strong?
Several special forms take this to an extreme, where the normal card is completely unused and only the Evolution or Hero has usage. We can identify these cases as balance issues, where the base card was nerfed excessively to balance a strong ability, instead of addressing the ability itself.
It seems incompatible to have both the normal card and the evolution in a balanced state, at least as long as the evolution provides a relevant advantage. But having balance between different Evolutions and Heroes can partially solve this issue; the limited amount of special slots gives a comparative advantage to the base forms.
In this section we compare the usage of a base card with the usage of its special forms. For this we use a metric called LUR, in short:
- If LUR is around 0 the card usage is well balanced among base and special forms
- If LUR is above +1 or below -1, these is a significant imbalance
What is LUR?
This chart introduces a new stat: Log-based Usage Ratio (LUR). This is a value that directly compares the usage of special forms with the usage of it's normal form.
The basic way to read it is:
- A positive value means that the special forms are more popular
- A negative value means that the normal form is more popular
The logarithm is simply used to translate this ratio into a simpler number that's easier to read. E.g.:
- LUR = -2: Normal is used 100x more
- LUR = -1: Normal is used 10x more
- LUR = 0: Usage is balance
- LUR = 1: Special is used 10x more
- LUR = 2: Special is used 100x more
Cards that have been completely overshadowed by their special forms (LUR = 3):
- Wizard
- Valkyrie
- Skeleton Barrel
- Elite Barbarians
And a few that very close to the complete replacement were Electro Dragon, Mortar, Witch and Minion Horde.
Most unappealing special forms compared to their normal counterparts:
- Ice Spirit
- Hunter
- Barbarian Barrel
| Card Name | Usage | Rank | HIM | U/M |
---
Spells
Barbarian Barrel jumps to the top and stops the 5-season streak of Fireball. The 11% usage increase is the biggest in the category, and seems to come mainly from replacing Hero Barb Barrel and The Log.
Fireball loses 2 usage points, but is still a very popular option.
The Log had the biggest decrease, from 23% to 17%, but remains popular as well.
Void's rework doesn't seem very appealing to players, as usage fell this season.
In terms of average rank, the best spells were Royal Delivery and Earthquake, like last season.
Card Name
---
Buildings
There were 44.7% of decks without any buildings at all, slightly more than last season (44.1%).
Evolved Goblin Cage lost 6% of usage after the nerf.
Bomb Tower had the best average rank.
Card Name
---
Win Conditions
Win Conditions are one of the best ways to look at archetype performance. Unlike support cards, which can fit in several archetypes, these are the core cards that define them.
Hog Rider remains the most popular WC.
Most WC usages have been fairly stable this month. The biggest increase was Graveyard (+3%), and the biggest decrease was Evo Wall Breakers (-5%).
This season, Skeleton Barrel was the only unused Win Condition.
Top 3 Win Conditions:
- Giant
- Evolved Royal Hogs
- Graveyard

Checks and Balances
Balance results
Not only did last season add an enormous amount of balance changes, there was also a batch of mid-season balance. When so many cards are changed at once, it becomes hard to evaluate their effects.

New changes
The balances for next season were already announced, so we can take a look at their current stats. Did they deserve the buffs and nerfs?

This leaderboard sorts countries based on the amount of players in the Top 1,000.
The amount of players for each country is displayed in the "Count" column; to the right, you can see a ±value, which is the change compared to last season.
Signature Cards are cards which were disproportionately used in the region when compared to the global average. The 5 displayed cards are sorted, meaning that the first card is the Top 1 signature card. Usually signature cards hint towards a specific archetype that is unusually popular in the country.
Calculating Signature Cards
The concept mentioned above translates in a simple way to math. The goal is to calculate the difference bewteen general usage and local usage (ΔUR).
- Card Use Rate (CUR): average usage of a card in the top 1K
- Local Card Use Rate (LCUR): average usage of a card among the top 1K players of a country
Therefore, a high ΔUR means that a card is used more locally; we simply sort all cards by ΔUR in descending order, and pick the first 5 as Signature Cards.
Note that the differences we are measuring are absolute. This means that low usage cards are less likely to appear as Signature Cards. For example, suppose X-Bow has 1% usage, and the United States has 10% usage of X-Bow; we could consider that X-Bow is 10x more popular in this region, but we just take into account the +9% ΔUR.
High usage cards tend to have higher ΔUR due to their higher variance. We consider that an advantage of this method, as high usage cards are more relevant for meta highlights.
